Georgina Bird 49th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology 2021

Georgina Bird

I am a PhD biomedical student primarily studying in the area of cardiovascular immunology. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and morbidity both in New Zealand and worldwide. Following myocardial infarction (a heart attack), patients are at a significantly increased risk of developing recurrent cardiac events including death. Immunology and inflammation play a key role in the clinical outcomes of patients after experiencing an MI. The primary focus of my research is determining whether monitoring inflammation, specifically focusing on B lymphocytes during the acute phase of myocardial infarction can add information to current risk stratification of these patients.
